Supertasters in Primary 5&6
Supertasters experience bitter tastes more strongly than other people as they have a higher number of taste receptors. Today the class learnt that the special name for these are fungiform papillae. We conducted an experiment where in groups of 3, we painted each others tongue with natural blue food colouring and then using a hole punched card to help us count the number of fungiform papillae. Once we had completed this, we looked at the key to find out if we were Supertasters. The more fungiform papillae we counted showed our taste was more developed. We had some really great Supertasters with more than 11. Luckily the food colouring disappeared when we took a drink of water!
